Prose is a free, open-source markdown editor for macOS with optional AI assistance. It's designed for distraction-free writing in plain .md files with no proprietary formats and no lock-in.
Prose works directly with .md files on your local filesystem. There's no Prose-specific database or proprietary format — your files are exactly the markdown you wrote, openable in any text editor.
The editor works without one. To use the AI chat features, you need an Anthropic API key. You can add it under Settings → AI. Your key is stored securely in the macOS Keychain and is never sent anywhere except directly to Anthropic.
Prose uses your own Anthropic API key, so you pay Anthropic directly for what you use — typically a fraction of a cent per chat message. Prose does not mark up or proxy these costs.
Yes, for basic editing. The AI chat features require internet access to reach Anthropic's API. File editing, saving, and all standard markdown features work fully offline.
Because Prose works with plain .md files, you can sync via iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Git, or any other file-sync tool that handles your files. Open the synced folder in Prose and it works.
Open the Window menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen and click "Prose" to bring the window back. You can also click the Prose icon in the dock.
Double-check the key in Settings → AI. Anthropic API keys start with sk-ant-. If you recently regenerated your key on the Anthropic console, the old one will stop working — paste the new one. If the issue persists, file a support request below with the exact error message.
Prose is now free, so new downloads have nothing to refund. If you purchased an earlier version, refunds are handled directly by Apple. Visit reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, find your Prose purchase, and request a refund there. Apple typically responds within 48 hours.
File one through the form below. Feature requests get the support label and are reviewed alongside bug reports. Prose is also open source under MIT — pull requests welcome at github.com/solo-ist/prose.
